Chapter Eighteen

A Time For Fear

It was long past midnight when Leonardo Mayfire at last spotted the target he’d long sought after. Vivian and Stacey weren’t far behind him as he ducked down a side street and found concealment behind a dumpster.

‘Is that them?’ Vivian asked, her piercing green gaze firmly set on the five Wicked patrolling the jail.

Leo didn’t need to check. He already knew it was them. Her. The Witch who had so readily killed T.W and the Wizards who had held him down as she did so. He’d spent a lot of time watching them, following them, keeping his eyes out for them. They would pay for what they had done. They had to.

Leo still struggled to come to terms with his failure. He’d let them kill an innocent Enchanted. He’d remained motionless as they murdered T.W before Leo’s eyes. T.W deserved revenge. They deserved their punishment. What was it Erebus had said? Actions have consequences.

Leo shuddered, pulling his body behind the dumpster and leaning back against the brick wall of the alleyway. What was he thinking? Killing them for killing T.W. He wasn’t like Erebus. He wasn’t so cold blooded… was he? He didn’t know anymore. After all that had happened, the Wicked taking his people hostage, invading his land, harming his students, his wife. They were killing innocent Enchanted. Humans too. It was hard for him not to feel angry. Not to want to avenge them.

The conflicting feelings inside him fought for dominance as he pressed his head back against the cool brick, eyes rising to the starry sky. After seeing his father again, he’d felt so… lost. He didn’t know why. It was as though he had completely lost control of his life. He could no longer keep his students, his family, his friends safe. His father was free and working alongside him as if nothing had happened in their past. The Wicked were taking over the world. And he felt so helpless.

Leo pressed his lips together, stamping down the rising doubt within him. He wasn’t completely helpless though. He could still do something. The Wicked deserved what was coming. It was war, and there were no rules in war. An eye for an eye.

Finding purchase in the brick, he hauled himself to his feet and nodded a yes to Vivian. She stood too, already tugging her blade free from its scabbard.

‘Are you certain?’ Stacey asked, eyeing them both then the Wicked who were yet to notice them.

Leo peered over his shoulder one last time and saw the face of the Witch who had so brutally murdered T.W. A jolt of electricity shot through him at seeing her face and he narrowed his eyes. Pulling two daggers from his belt, he stepped out into the alleyway, the moonlight blazing down over him.

‘I’m sure,’ he said, and charged for the Wicked.

Laura was shocked to find the uniform of at least ten Wicked Guards laid out on the dirt ground of the cavern. She’d known about the hopes to kill off some of the Wicked, but for it to have happened so soon left her feeling queasy.
